Community Practice Overview
This Level One community practice offers eight weekly 1 hour live group learning and practice sessions, supplemented with written materials, audio/video recordings, handouts, and recording of the live group sessions. The learning is centered around conversation exercises and practices of mindfulness and empathy in community to do during and between the weekly live sessions with yourself and others in the course, as well as people in your life. The learning builds in layers each week, and the overarching practice is mindfulness in each moment with the inner and outer conversations of your life. The Live sessions happen on the Zoom video conferencing system, and you can also participate by audio only or by phone.

What is Mindfulness in Conversation?
Mindfulness in conversation is bringing the power of awareness, compassionate presence, and consciousness into speaking and listening with ourselves and others in the context of learning and practicing together in empathic community. Consciousness here includes relationship with the unconscious — poetic imagination, internal parts and dimensions, spirituality. This approach combines awareness practice with a universal language based in human needs and a neuroscience understanding of the brain and nervous system. There are four components of mindfulness and language — Observation, Feeling, Need, and Request. They are doorways to empathic connection, healing compassion, and accessing creative possibility. Learn how these elements forge into practical skills for speaking and listening in conversation with yourself and others. Build empathic community, respond to challenges, and create the life and world you long for one conversation at a time.
Community Practice Schedule
Week 1: Introduction and beginning awareness and language practice with the 4 dimensions of mindfulness based on the OFNR communication components.
Week 2: Mindful Observation in Conversation — Speaking and listening from knowing yourself as the awareness of your mind rather than identifying with thinking (perceiving, words, images).
Week 3: Mindful Feeling in Conversation — Speaking and listening from knowing yourself as compassionate presence with your body rather than identifying with emotions and sensations.
Week 4: Universal Needs and Life Energy — Connecting with a language of life based in universal human needs combined with experiencing the energy and aliveness of the body.
Week 5: Needs and Levels of Empowerment — Working with the relationship between our thoughts, feelings, and needs in ways that take us to greater levels of well being and empowerment.
Week 6: Mindfulness and Requests — Creating the life you want and world you envision by expanding awareness and accessing the field of creative potential and possibility, asking for what you want to find solutions, contribute, and give and receive compassionately.
Week 7: Courageous Honesty and The Power of Empathy — We'll practice honest self-expression from the heart, asking for what you would like, and being able to hear and say "no" compassionately, and being able to hear beneath judgment, blame, criticism and demand to the heart of the other person and find our shared human connection.
